Heenan & Browne Visa and Migration Services is committed to keeping our community informed about the latest developments from the Department of Home Affairs concerning the ongoing Hamas-Israel conflict. Below is an important update regarding visa support and financial assistance available for affected individuals:

Visa Processing

The Department of Home Affairs is actively processing visa applications for individuals impacted by the conflict. Those seeking to travel to Australia are encouraged to explore various visa options.

Emergency Financial Assistance

The Australian Government has provided an additional $1 million for the 2024-25 period to assist people from the most affected areas in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. This funding, totalling $3 million over two years, is intended to help those on temporary visas in Australia who are experiencing financial hardship. Assistance is available through the Australian Red Cross in the form of small cash payments or vouchers for essential needs like food, medicine, and shelter. Details on how to apply can be found here.

Exiting Gaza

Exiting Gaza poses significant challenges due to stringent border controls. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is focusing its efforts on assisting Australian citizens, permanent residents, and their immediate family members. It is important to note that the Australian government advises that having an Australian visa does not guarantee the ability to exit Gaza or receive consular assistance.

Staying Longer in Australia

For those in Australia on temporary visas who need to extend their stay, there are several visa options available, including skilled, family visa, student visa, and visitor visas. Individuals unable to return home or access standard visa pathways may consider applying for a Bridging visa E (subclass 050), which provides a lawful means to stay in Australia while resolving immigration status. This visa will also grant full work rights and access to Medicare.

Travel Requirements for Children

Children travelling to Australia with one parent must have permission from both parents. If obtaining this consent is not feasible, you may be able to submit other relevant documentation to facilitate your child’s travel.
