Visa News

In the latest Canberra Matrix Invitation Round held on 19 September 2024, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) continued its approach of allocating nomination places monthly, aligned with the annual pro-rata distribution. The process aims to select the highest-ranking candidates across various occupations, primarily focusing on those deemed essential for the region’s development.

 Determining Factors for Invitation

The selection criteria are multifaceted, taking into account priority sectors, the number of remaining nomination slots for the month, the timing of Matrix submissions, occupation-specific caps, and overall demand within each sector. Due to high competition, occupations with greater demand generally require higher Matrix scores for candidates to be considered for an invitation.

It’s important to note that achieving the minimum ranking score is merely indicative and does not guarantee an invitation to apply for ACT nomination. Furthermore, candidates who either have an active application in the system or have previously been nominated by the ACT are ineligible for another invitation in this round.

 Priority Given to Critical Sectors

Canberra places a special emphasis on occupations identified as critical, offering prioritisation in the selection process to meet urgent skills shortages within the territory.

 No Individual Assessments for Ranking

The ACT does not accommodate requests for information regarding individual ranking positions or the probability of receiving an invitation. All decisions are made based on objective criteria related to the labour market needs and are not influenced by personal circumstances such as upcoming visa expiries or significant birthdays.

Specific Results of the Invitation Round

In this round, various subclasses of visas received differing numbers of invitations:

Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated Visa) and Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa) saw invitations distributed among Canberra residents and overseas applicants, with particular attention to those nominating critical skill occupations.

For Canberra residents:

Looking Ahead

The Canberra Matrix system continues to be a structured and strategic mechanism by the ACT government to address the region’s specific economic and employment needs through careful selection of skilled migrants. As global dynamics and local demands evolve, the criteria and focus areas of the Matrix are expected to adapt, aiming to drive sustained growth and development in the territory.
