The Australian housing construction sector is poised for a significant boost with the recent announcement by The Hon Brendan O’Connor MP, Minister for Skills and Training. A new initiative focuses on fast-tracking the skills assessment process for migrants with building and construction experience. This move is designed to address the urgent need for skilled and experienced workers in the sector, promising a smoother and quicker pathway for those looking to make their mark in Australia’s booming construction industry.

Fast-Tracking Skills Assessment for Migrants

Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) has committed to prioritising the processing of approximately 2,600 skills assessments in targeted construction occupations over the next two years. Additionally, about 1,900 potential migrants from countries with comparable qualifications are also expected to benefit from this prioritisation, particularly those aiming to contribute to Australia’s housing and construction industry.

TRA will implement two main strategies to enhance the skills assessment process:

  1. Prioritised Assessments:

   – Starting from 1 July 2024, TRA will prioritise the evaluation of applications for specific occupations listed in the attachments provided. This prioritisation will apply to both existing eligible applications and new entries, ensuring they are moved to the front of the queue. TRA-approved Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) are also encouraged to fast-track assessments for these key roles in the housing construction sector.

  1. Streamlined Assessments:

   – From 31 July 2024, the assessment procedure will be simplified by eliminating the mandatory Offshore Skills Assessment Programme (OSAP) requirement for certain occupation/country of passport combinations. Applicants who possess relevant Australian or overseas qualifications can directly apply for the Migration Skills Assessment (MSA), a more cost-effective and straightforward TRA in-house assessment. Those without qualifications have the option to opt-in for OSAP, if necessary.

Benefits for Migrants and Industry

These changes not only facilitate a faster assessment process but also make it financially accessible. Migrants are encouraged to take advantage of the simplified MSA wherever possible to expedite their journey towards employment in Australia’s construction industry. This initiative supports the sector’s growth by filling critical skill gaps and provides significant opportunities for skilled migrants in the building and construction industry seeking to establish a thriving career in Australia.

Further Information

Detailed factsheets on the initiative, including a comprehensive list of eligible occupations and countries, are available on the official TRA website.

This pivotal move by the Australian government is a beacon of opportunity for construction professionals around the world, signalling that now is the ideal time to consider applying for a visa if you are in the industry and planning to expand your horizons in Australia. By streamlining and prioritising skills assessments, the pathway to a rewarding career in Australia’s construction sector is now more accessible than ever.
